Iowa companies offer UI students spring break opportunity

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The third annual Spring Break in Iowa will again allow University of Iowa students to spend spring break working with Iowa companies.

The Iowa Human Resource Recruitment Consortium is sponsoring Spring Break in Iowa, a program designed to enhance students’ resumes and provide project-oriented, work experience during the spring break week, March 18-22 or March 25-29. The program has been extended to two sessions this year to accommodate different colleges’ schedules and allow more students to participate.

Students interested in this program should forward their resume to by Jan. 23. They are asked to list their preferred week and top three companies of choice for the program. Resumes will be forwarded to employers on Jan. 28 and students will be notified the week of Feb. 18 about their acceptance.

Students will be able to make valuable connections by networking with Iowa companies. They will not be paid for the weeklong program but companies will cover transportation, lodging and meals. Through the Iowa Human Resource Recruitment Consortium, companies will also host an evening event that both students and employers participate in together. The event will bring students from different colleges together to compare experiences and give employers the opportunity to encourage students to seek future employment in Iowa.

The UI Career Center will be promoting Spring Break in Iowa to UI students by encouraging participation.

"It's a great opportunity for students to get inside Iowa organizations and potentially build a relationship that can result in a long-term employment situation. It also adds a finished project to your resume," said Jane Schildroth, director of the Career Center.

Spring Break in Iowa is featuring 10 Iowa companies such as HON Industries, Principal Financial Group and Rockwell Collins.
