Student government holds childcare roundtable talks
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Student Government (UISG) has
announced that it will hold a roundtable discussion on childcare issues as
they affect UI students at noon Dec. 6 at the Latino-Native American Cultural
Center (308 Melrose Ave.).
The roundtable talks are the first in what is expected to be a series of
monthly discussions sponsored by the student government, says Nick Klenske,
UISG president. The topic of childcare is being addressed now because the
UISG feels "it is important to start looking at what the UI and UISG
can do to help with childcare costs, in light of the increasing costs of education,"
Klenske said. The talks are also an element of the New Deal for Students,
a UISG initiative that presently embodies 10 ideals to help students afford
education, Klenske said.
"I see my role as just opening up a discussion to give students an
opportunity to brainstorm" and create ideas that can be improved, Klenske
said, adding that students' comments on the issue will be compiled into a
report and presented to UI administrators.
Attendees of the roundtable are expected to include administrators, graduate
and undergraduate students, especially those UI students with children, Klenske
The discussion is free and open to the public. For more information about
