WOW! 2001 activities set for new and returning students
WOW! 2001, the annual
University of Iowa Weeks of Welcome events which acquaint new and returning
students to UI programs, offices and resources, and campus community offerings
begins Sunday, Aug. 26 and continues through Friday, Sept. 7.
Over the course of the two-week program, students
can take part in events such as the Hawkeye Carnival and barbeque (BBQ), Here
at Last, Campus Colleagues Luncheon, and other events designed to help them
meet fellow students, faculty and staff, and to explore community volunteer
and other activities.
WOW! 2001 is coordinated by the Office of Student
Life, University Life Centers at the Iowa Memorial Union, Orientation Services,
the Office of Admissions, and the Department of Residence Services in collaboration
with the Office of the Vice President for Student Services.
WOW! 2001 consists of the events described below:
SUNDAY, AUG. 26
Hawkeye Carnival and BBQ (Hubbard Park, 4 to 7 p.m.)
-- Carnival games such as Bouncy Boxing, Human Gyroscope and free food,
including participation by UI coaches and athletes who will sign autographs.
Rain location: Main Lounge and Sun Porch, IMU
WOW! Here at Last
(Hancher Auditorium, 7:30
p.m.) -- Welcome and spirit program and an evening of fun, games and
prizes. Attended by President Mary Sue Coleman and other UI personalities.
WOW! Fireworks (Viewing area: Hancher Green.
Fireworks launch site: City Park, approx.
8:45 p.m.) -- Start your year off with a BANG! Grab a blanket and head
to Hancher Green for the show that starts at dusk.
Thursday, Aug. 30
Ice Cream Social and Student Activities Fair (Hubbard
Park, 11 a.m. 2 p.m.) Hubbard Park is the place for a
refreshing midday treat and the place to learn how you can get involved
in some of the UI's student groups. Rain location: Second Floor Ballroom,
Friday, Aug. 31
Downtown Street Festival, (Iowa City City
Plaza- 5 p.m. - 10 p.m.)Let's get serious, your social life is
all about seeing and being seen, isn't it? The hippest party in town takes
place on the Pedestrian Mall complete with live bands, carnival rides and
other entertainment for students and families, too.
Saturday, Sept. 1
Get Hypnotized (Main Lounge, Iowa Memorial Union,
8 p.m.) -- Spend an evening with Chuck Milligan, one of the country's
hottest comedian-hypnotists. Chuck has entertained college audiences around
the country. Seats fill up fast, so don't miss out!
Night Games (UI Field House, 11 p.m. 2 a.m.)
-- Late night fun with basketball, volleyball, racquetball, swimming,
and rock climbing.
Tuesday, Sept. 4
Campus Colleagues Luncheon (Main Lounge, IMU, 11:45
a.m. 1 p.m.) -- What are faculty and staff really like when you
get them out of the office or classroom? Enjoy a free lunch and an opportunity
to find out the truth behind the myths surrounding your campus colleagues.
University Lecture Committee presents Kurt Vonnegut
(Main Lounge, IMU,
7:30 p.m.) -- Don't miss this exciting chance
to hear Kurt Vonnegut, UI Writers' Workshop lecturer and author of "Slaughterhouse-Five"
and "God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater." Free and open to the public.
Wednesday, Sept. 5
Community Services Fair (Kautz Plaza on the T. Anne
Cleary Walkway, 10 a.m. to
1 p.m.) -- Learn how to give back to the Iowa City community by donating
your time and talent.
A wide range of service agencies will be on hand to provide students with
information on how to become involved and volunteer. Rain location: Main
Thursday Sept. 6
Free Stuff Day (IMU Main Lounge, Wheel Room, River
Room, 11 a.m. 3 p.m.) -- Explore the place where students gather
and study. Come for FREE stuff, entertainment, snacks. The events will be
broadcast live by Z102.9 FM.
Friday, Sept. 7
Night Hawks (Main Lounge, IMU, 8:30 p.m.) --
WOW's newest program, Night Hawks, includes "Hawkeye Hundred," the UI's
own version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" with a dance party, game
tournaments, and late-night breakfast buffet.
