Des Moines business leaders share their success with
UI Evening MBA class
How can you be successful in today's competitive business
environment? Some 14 executives at Iowa companies and organizations will share
their personal insights on this management question this fall as part of a
University of Iowa Evening MBA course.
The Tippie School of Management's new course "Contemporary
Management Theory -- The Executive Viewpoint" gathers some of the most successful
CEOs and managers in the Des Moines area, including: Des Moines Register publisher
Mary Stier; Dan Porter, chairman and CEO of Wells Fargo Financial; Richard
(Dick) Jacobson, chairman, Jacobson Companies; and Kyle Krause, chief operating
officer of Krause Gentle Corp. UI Athletic Director Bob Bowlsby will talk
about directing a major intercollegiate athletics program and management issues
in the non-profit sector.
The class meets 6 to 9:15 p.m. Thursdays from Sept. 6
to Nov. 29 at the W.A. Krause Center, 6100 Grand Avenue in Des Moines.
"We are providing a learning experience combining practical
experience from the world of business and the work of the best scholars in
the field of management. These top executives are offering their experience
to MBA students preparing for leadership roles in business and government,"
said Colleen Downie, director of the UI Evening MBA program.
She added that Bill Krause, CEO of Krause Gentle Corp,
was instrumental in organizing the class, recruiting and scheduling many of

Instructor Chris Trank said a different executive will
join the course each week offering insights into a range of management topics,
and will field questions from the students after their presentation.
"During the class, we will focus on how successful executives
link planning, organizing, leading, and controlling together in order to make
things happen in their organizations and to remain competitive," Trank said.
"By understanding the link between what top managers do and successful business
outcomes, students can then begin to make these connections in their own careers."
As part of their assignment, student teams will be responsible
for a general management topic area. "Each team's work will be combined to
create a working handbook that students can take away from the class and use
in their own careers," Trank explained.
Registration continues through Sept. 5 for the Executive
Viewpoints class, but spaces are filling quickly. For more information, contact
