Collins Earns Outstanding Educator Award

The American Accounting Association (AAA) has selected Daniel W. Collins, Henry B. Tippie Research Chair in Accounting at the University of Iowa, as recipient of its 2001 Outstanding Educator Award.

Since 1973, the Association has recognized Outstanding Accounting Educators for their contributions to accounting education from scholarly endeavors in research and teaching over a sustained period of time -- through publications, educational innovation, research guidance to graduate and undergraduate students, excellence in teaching, significant involvement in professional and academic societies and activities, and advising and intellectual guidance of students.

Collins received the Outstanding Accounting Educator Award on Aug. 15 at the AAA Annual Meeting in Atlanta.

Collins has made substantial contributions to accounting through outstanding research, exemplary teaching and mentoring of students, and extensive service to the profession, according to the AAA. After earning his Ph.D. at the UI in 1973, Collins began his career on the accounting faculty at Michigan State University, where he served for five years. He joined the UI faculty in 1977 and has taught at the Henry B. Tippie College of Business ever since except for a year in which he visited as the IBM Professor of Business at Duke University.

Collins was recently recognized as one of the top 10 most cited authors in leading academic accounting journals. In addition, Collins has performed most skillfully as a teacher and mentor, according to the AAA. He has won three awards for teaching excellence, and received the Iowa Board of Regents Award for Faculty Excellence in 2000. In addition, Collins has co-authored a widely adopted text in financial reporting, and he has served on 33 doctoral dissertation committees of which he served as chair for 19 students.

He served on the Financial Accounting Standards Advisory Council, and previously chaired the AAA's Publications Committee, Annual Meeting Program, and Doctoral Consortium Committee, in addition to serving on many other key committees. Dan Collins also has been associate editor or editorial board member for five major academic journals.

Collins, a native of Marshalltown, currently resides in Iowa City.
