WSUI's Iowa Talks to be broadcast live from the Java House

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Iowa Talks, eastern Iowa's premier call-in program exploring political, cultural and economic issues, will broadcast four live shows from the Java House, 211 E. Washington, downtown Iowa City.

WSUI 910 AM, the University of Iowa's public radio station serving eastern Iowa, and host Ben Kieffer will present four broadcasts from the Java House at 10 a.m., Fridays, beginning Aug. 24. The live broadcasts are designed to encourage audience participation as well as call-in comments and questions from listeners.

"These live broadcasts are designed to bring live radio to our listeners and include listeners in the process of radio," said Dennis Reese, program director at WSUI. "Iowa Talks has a huge listening audience, and this is our opportunity to take Iowa Talks 'on the road.'"

The four programs cover a spectrum of issues, from proposed city ordinances to on-the-edge entertainment. Topics for the broadcasts follow:

-- Aug. 24, No-smoking ordinances

-- Aug. 31, International Writing Program

-- Sept. 7, The Mayflies

-- Sept. 14, The Vagina Monologues

"Grass-roots radio is what it's about. Everybody's invited. Listen in, walk in, call in -- have a cup o' java, and join the conversation," said Ben Kieffer, on-air host for the broadcasts.

Listeners can call in their questions at 466-9100 locally in Iowa City and Coralville, and (866) 780-9100, toll free in Iowa and Illinois.
