Public Safety makes arrest in UI assault case

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Department of Public Safety has arrested a man in connection with several reported assaults on campus late Sunday night. At 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, UI officers arrested Johnny Lee Jones, 34, no known address. Jones was charged with assault with intent to commit sexual abuse, false imprisonment and two charges of simple assault.

On the afternoon of Aug. 7, investigators received information that a person matching the description of the suspect may have been in the Iowa City area Aug. 6, the day after someone attempted to assault three staff members at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. They subsequently learned that he had traveled by bus to Waterloo and checked himself into a shelter.

Investigators drove to Waterloo and interviewed Jones, who admitted to the assaults. He was driven back to Iowa City and placed in the Johnson County Jail.

The first incident occurred at approximately 11:15 p.m. Sunday. A male suspect followed a female staff member onto an elevator and grabbed her. She escaped her attacker when the elevator door opened.

The second incident occurred approximately five minutes later at 11:20 p.m. Another female staff member was grabbed while in a hallway. She also fled from her assailant.

The third incident occurred outside a parking ramp near the hospital between 11:25 p.m. and 11:40 p.m. The same suspect approached a female staff member. She pushed him away and reported the encounter to a parking ramp cashier.
