Lundell to discuss workplace violence May 9 in Council Bluffs

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- John Lundell, deputy director of the University of Iowa Injury Prevention Research Center, will deliver a presentation titled "Violence in the Workplace" from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 9 at the Council Bluffs Public Library, 400 Willow Ave., in Council Bluffs.

The event, part of the Council Bluffs Chamber of Commerce's "Building Block" series for Chamber members, is open to the public. The cost of the presentation is $10. To register or for more information, contact the Council Bluffs Chamber of Commerce at (712) 325-1000.

Last month Lundell and colleagues in the UI College of Public Health released a report that identified workplace violence as a significant public health concern, one that affects two million workers each year. The report, "Workplace Violence: A Report to the Nation," was the result of a workshop held last year in Washington, D.C. The workshop brought together experts from industry, labor, academia and the government to study workplace violence and more clearly define the scope of the problem. The report called for a major research funding effort in order to better understand the issue and develop ways to reduce and prevent cases of violence in the workplace.

"Workplace violence has become a public health issue," Lundell said. "It's not just a crime issue, a private industry issue or labor issue. More discussion -- and more research -- is needed to develop ways to prevent workplace violence from occurring and to address the ramifications when it does occur."

The presentation is sponsored by the Council Bluffs Chamber of Commerce, in cooperation with the Southwest Iowa Regents Resource Center and the UI Speakers Bureau.
