Sorofman appointed president of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Science

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Bernard Sorofman, Ph.D., associate professor of clinical and administrative pharmacy at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, will be installed as president of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Science for the 2000-01 term at the American Pharmaceutical Association's (APhA) annual meeting. Sorofman also became a member of the APhA's Board of Trustees.

Sorofman said he has been working on defining specific scientific processes that can inform health care policy through research. As president, he said he plans to address the two main areas that need to be researched and understood by the organization: patient safety and the national shortage of pharmacists.

Sorofman was also named associate dean for Academic Affairs in the UI College of Pharmacy, effective July 1. He will replace Lloyd Matheson, Ph.D., who held the position for more than 10 years.

A UI faculty member since 1984, Sorofman also has served as university ombudsperson since July 1999. He was also one of 16 faculty member recipients of the UI 2000-01 Collegiate Teaching Awards.

Sorofman earned a B.S. in pharmacy at the University of Oklahoma in 1979 and a Ph.D. in social administrative pharmacy from the University of Minnesota in 1984.
