UI graduate student to teach 6th grade class about Mayan culture

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Eladio Mateo Toledo ("B'alam"), a University of Iowa graduate student in linguistics from Guatemala, will visit Kirkwood Elementary School from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 25 to teach 6th grade students about the Mayan culture. This visit is arranged by the International Classroom Program (ICP).

ICP arranges for UI international students to visit area classrooms and speak about their cultures, in order to challenge American stereotypes of foreigners, enliven studies in geography, history, literature and the social sciences, and enable foreign visitors to gain a better understanding of the United States.

Photographers and videographers are welcome. Kirkwood Elementary School is located at 1401 9th Street in Coralville. Visitors should go to the main office to be guided to Susan Thomas' classroom. For more information, contact ICP Coordinator Karina Danielsen at (319) 335-1442.
