Kimberley Ray to manage BASE Program

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Law, Health Policy & Disability Center and the Iowa Department of Economic Development have named Kimberley Ray the new administrator for the Business Assistance Services for Entrepreneurs (BASE) program.

Ray, from Albia, Iowa, will manage the statewide program that offers training, information, technical assistance services and Web site resource materials for individuals with disabilities who are interested in starting or expanding a small business in Iowa.

BASE is a collaboration between the center and the Iowa Department of Economic Development. The center examines disability policy and its practical applications, both nationally and within Iowa.

Regional training seminars, including two-day Exploring Entrepreneurship seminars and comprehensive 10-week business planning courses will be held across Iowa. The Exploring Entrepreneurship seminar will help people assess their entrepreneurial traits and skills, explore the myths and realities of self-employment, evaluate the pros and cons of business ownership, and learn how to identify realistic and achievable business goals and opportunities. The 10-week business planning course is designed to provide comprehensive information which individuals with disabilities need to successfully start or expand their own business.

BASE has published and continues to distribute a Resource Guide that provides information about federal, state and local sources of assistance available to entrepreneurs. The guide is useful in locating financial assistance, business consultation, training and the red tape associated with business ownership. The guide is available at no cost to individuals to disabilities who participate in the program and can be downloaded from the BASE Web site at
