More than 200 employers will be represented at UI Careers Day Sept. 28

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Representatives from more than 200 companies and organizations will be on campus Thursday, Sept. 28 to meet with students at the University of Iowa's 24th annual Careers Day.

Careers Day will be from noon to 5 p.m. Employers targeting a variety of majors will be in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union (IMU), while employers targeting engineering and technology majors will be in the Second Floor Ballroom of the IMU.

Careers Day is sponsored by the Business and Liberal Arts Placement Office (BLAPO), Career Development Services, Engineering Career Services, and MBA Career Services. It is designed to provide information and potential job contacts for students in all majors and at all levels of their educational careers. All classes (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, and graduate students) are welcome to attend.

Employers from Iowa and across the U.S. will be represented at Careers Day. Students can consider major national employers such as Kraft, Qwest Communications, Microsoft, the Mayo Clinic, IBM, Proctor and Gamble, and General Mills. Several Iowa-based companies including Pella Corporation, Principal Financial Group and Rockwell Collins will be at the Career Fair, as well as governmental agencies such as the Iowa Department of Personnel and Johnson County.

In addition to the diverse group of companies that will be at Career Day, there will also be representatives from non-profit organizations, government agencies, law enforcement, and the U.S. armed services.

"Students seeking full-time employment or internships should be in business attire for the event," advised Jayne Swanson, UI placement specialist. "Before the Careers Day, students also should do some research and know something about the companies they are interested in. All attending companies are listed on our webpage at"

Many companies will be doing on-campus interviews on Sept. 29, following the fair, she added. Events to help students prepare for Careers Day include:

-- BLAPO will present "Career Day Tips" on Thursday, Sept. 21 at 1:30 p.m. and Monday, Sept. 25 at 6:45 p.m., both in Room W401 of PBB.

-- Engineering Career Services (ECS) will present "Prep for Careers Day" on Tuesday,
Sept. 26 at 11 a.m. and Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 9:30 a.m., both in Room 4501 of Seamans Center.

-- A Careers Day Kick-Off reception will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 27 from 6:30 to
8:30 p.m. in the South Room of the IMU, as a way for students from diverse backgrounds and potential employers to discuss employment and internship opportunities in a casual setting. Students should dress in business casual attire and not bring resumes to this event, hosted by Career Development Services in conjunction with Opportunity at Iowa, International Programs, Support Service Programs, and the Undergraduate Programs Office of the Tippie College of Business.

-- Career Development Services will be hosting an educational program, "Where the Skills Are: Finding Interns in Surprising Places" from 10 to 11 a.m. Sept. 28 in the Lucas-Dodge Room of the IMU. The purpose of this program is to educate employers about the benefits of hiring students with Liberal Arts degrees.
