Tailgate party features dunk tank, space walk, free food

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- UI Residence Life staff members may be hoping for warm, sunny weather before this Saturday's Iowa vs. Western Michigan football game since they are headed for the dunk tank during the free tailgate party from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. next to Lot 14 behind Slater Hall. Associated Residence Halls (ARH) students will have an opportunity to dunk their favorite Residence Life staff member at this football season's first alcohol-free tailgate.

Those who park in Lot 14 and all other alcohol-free Hawkeye fans are invited to stuff themselves on hotdogs, hamburgers and Blue Bunny ice cream and tune in to music from Murphy Sounds. Party games include an inflated "Space Walk" trampoline, velcro tic-tac-toe toss, volleyball and basketball. Volunteers serving up refreshments and fun are members of Westside Hall Associations: United Slater Association (USA); Student Hall Association of Rienow and Quadrangle (SHARQ); and Hillcrest Association (HA).

Lot 14 is located just south of Slater Residence Hall at the northeast corner of Melrose and Grand Avenues and is UI's designated alcohol-free lot. Football parking is available in all UI lots beginning at 7 a.m. for $5 per car. Game time Saturday is 1:05 p.m.

Sponsorship for Lot 14 alcohol-free tailgates is through the Stepping Up Project, a community and campus coalition to reduce the harmful effects of excessive drinking, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the nation's largest health care philanthropy.
