Community-wide reception Sept. 7 will launch UI Libraries' InfoHawk

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Libraries will hold a UI community-wide reception to celebrate the debut of the new InfoHawk online catalog system from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7 at the North Exhibition Hall of the Main Library. Food and light beverages will be served.

University Librarian Nancy L. Baker and Provost Jon Whitmore will make brief remarks about the Web-based InfoHawk, launched earlier this month to replace the text-based OASIS catalog system. InfoHawk allows students, faculty and the UI community search access to more than 3 million records via an easy-to-use Windows interface.

A UI contest to name the new system produced five winners, each of whom will receive a $100 award. Those winners have also been invited to attend the reception.

The winning submissions were received from Anthony Carroll, sophomore, journalism and communications studies; Anna Sluz, graduate student, geography, and Renee Van't Land, graduate student, Institute for Hydraulic Research.

Two other UI students and faculty received $100 from a separate contest drawing. Those winners are Ronald Lauer, professor of pediatrics and epidemiology; and Diana Hu, senior, film production. Lauer has donated his prize to the UI Libraries project funds. Hu says she will use her winnings to help finance her thesis film. Two additional $50 award winners were selected by a drawing of all submissions. The winners are John Fry, doctoral student, history; and Yiqiang Wang, post-doctoral researcher, department of internal medicine.
