Planet X, UI Parents Association sponsor alcohol-free tailgate

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- An alcohol-free tailgate party will begin at 9 a.m. in UI Lot 14 before the 11:10 a.m. start time of the Iowa vs. Ohio State home football game this Saturday. Sponsors for this UI Family Weekend event are the UI Parents Association and Planet X, a local family entertainment center.

Top 40 radio station B100 99.7 FM will broadcast live from their Jam Van at the tailgate. UI student Karol Dymkowski will co-host the broadcast. Tailgate organizers will provide free food, chips, beverages and are planning for larger crowds. The Lot 14 tailgate party is free and open to all students, visitors and community members. "We’ve had more than 400 partiers at our last two tailgates, and the numbers are increasing," said Julie Phye, director of the Stepping Up Project. "Plan to arrive early to be first in line for the food."

Lot 14 is located at the northeast corner of Melrose and Grand Avenues and is UI’s designated alcohol-free lot. Football parking is available in all UI lots beginning at 7 a.m. for $5 per car.

Sponsorship for Lot 14 alcohol-free tailgates is through the Stepping Up Project, a community and campus coalition to reduce the harmful effects of excessive drinking, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the nation's largest health care philanthropy.
