UISG sponsors legislative forum Oct. 11

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Student Government will host a legislative forum to allow students to address their concerns on student-related issues to candidates for the Iowa House of Representatives on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. in the Wheelroom of the Iowa Memorial Union.

Incumbent seat holder Richard Myers (D), District 49, incumbent Ro Foge (D), District 50, and District 45 seat challengers Paul Heyn (R), and a representative for candidate Vicki Lensing (D) will field questions from students on a range of issues, said Sara Stephenson, UISG undergraduate collegiate senate executive.

"The forum will provide students with an opportunity to pose questions directly to their elected representatives. All points of view will be considered. This is a non-partisan event and the focus will be on student issues rather than party lines," Stephenson said.

The forum will also serve as an event to register voters and participation in legislative issues, says Eric Parker, UISG senator, who adds that the UISG has planned other voter participation events prior to the November general election, such as a voter turnout drive.

"Students need to realize that decisions made by the state legislature affect their lives on a number of topics including tuition and taxes," Stephenson said.

"We hope to help students realize the important role they play in the decision-making process," Stephenson said.
