UI announces Oct. 12 closing of Highway 6

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A portion of Highway 6 in Iowa City will be closed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12 during construction of a pedestrian overpass, according to the University of Iowa Facilities Services Group, Design and Construction Services.

People who need to get to the Veterans Affairs Medical Center will be allowed to use Highway 6 between the entrance to that facility and the intersection with Hawkins Drive and Rocky Shore Drive. However, all other traffic traveling east on Highway 6 will be detoured onto Hawkins Drive to Melrose and Grand Avenues.

Motorists traveling west on Highway 6 will be routed up Grand Avenue to Melrose Avenue and Hawkins Drive. Highway 6 will remain open for people who wish to take Newton Road and Riverside Drive, but it will be closed at the intersection with Riverside Drive.

During the temporary road closing, construction workers will pour the concrete decking for the Highway 6 pedestrian overpass connecting the UI International Center to the UI health sciences campus. The new pedestrian walkway will provide safe access between the two areas of campus. Currently, pedestrians must cross railroad tracks and four lanes of traffic on Highway 6.
