UI to hold second annual Prepare Our Sons for Life program Oct. 17

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa will hold its second annual Prepare Our Sons for Life program for UI families the afternoon of Tuesday, Oct. 17 at the Iowa Memorial Union.

Registration is limited and RSVPs must be received by Thursday, Oct. 12. For more information or to RSVP, call the UI WorkLife office at 353-2314.

The program, developed at the UI in 1999 to address the gender-specific needs of raising boys in today's society, begins with a pizza lunch for participating children and their parents. A local teenage band, King Redbird, will perform during lunch and UI WorkLife Director Laura Reed will welcome guests.

Dating Cellos, a local theater group associated with United Action for Youth, will perform as part of the keynote presentation. Other activities will provide opportunities for younger children to focus on community service, caring for self and others and conflict resolution.

The afternoon will close with a motivational talk by Eddie Moore Jr., from Cornell College, presentation of door prizes and short closing speech by Diane Finnerty from the UI Office of Affirmative Action.

The event is open to parents (or adult sponsors) employed at the University of Iowa and their school-aged children. There is no admission charge for the program, but participants are asked to bring daily care items (for example combs or picks, hair care products, toothbrushes, toothpaste, wash cloths, soap) to be donated to the Emergency Housing Program.

The event is sponsored by the UI WorkLife/Human Resources Office, the Office of Affirmative Action, the Office of the Provost, the UI Staff Council and the University Life Centers.
