Steven Maravetz is named director of Health Science Relations

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Steven Maravetz, who has served as interim director of Health Science Relations (HSR) at the University of Iowa for the past two years, has been named permanently to the position.

As director, Maravetz will oversee media relations, publications, and public relations planning and counsel for the five colleges on the Health Sciences campus, including the Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy and Public Health.

"We've been very pleased to have someone of Steve's capabilities and experience in this position for the past two years," said David Skorton, vice president for research and interim vice president for university relations. "After a national search, Steve rose to the top of a competitive group of candidates."

The director of Health Science Relations reports jointly to the vice president for university relations and dean of the College of Medicine. "Steve Maravetz has shown excellence in planning and conducting strategic communications for the health science colleges, and we are delighted he has accepted this position," said College of Medicine Executive Dean Richard Nelson.

Maravetz, a native of Waterloo, Iowa, and graduate of Columbus High School there, has a B.A. in communications from UNI and an M.A. in journalism and mass communications from the University of Iowa. Formerly he was director of public relations at CRST International in Cedar Rapids, was on the communications faculty at UNI, and editor of the Area Business Magazine in Waterloo. Since coming to the UI as an associate editor in University News Services in 1991, he has served as assistant director for news in HSR and was named HSR's interim director in 1998.
