Howell appointed chair of accreditation council
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- R. Edward Howell, CEO and director of University of Iowa
Hospitals and Clinics recently accepted the position of chair of the Accreditation
Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
"Ed Howell is a strong supporter of graduate medical education,"
said David Leach, M.D., executive director of ACGME. "I am pleased that
he has agreed to serve as our chair. His expertise and leadership in this
arena are invaluable."
The council is responsible for accrediting all post-medical doctorate education
in the U.S. Its members review post-graduate continuing medical education
programs offered to people who have received their doctorate of medicine degrees.
"The opportunity to chair the council is very gratifying," said
Howell. "I look forward to fulfilling the responsibilities of the position
and helping ensure that our nation's physicians continue to receive the finest
continuing education programs available anywhere."
Jim Bently of the American Hospital Association (AHA) added, "Throughout
Ed Howell has distinguished himself as a hospital administrator and an educator.
He is ideally suited to meet the demands of this position."
Howell's term as chair of the ACGME will run for one year.

the UI College of Medicine and the UI Hospitals and Clinics and the patient
care, medical education and research programs and services they provide.
