Relocated Newton Road to open at 6 p.m. Nov. 1
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The relocated Newton Road will open for vehicular traffic
at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1. At that time, all vehicular traffic will be switched
over onto the new road.
After that time, all bus routes will be along the new roadway and buses
will no longer pick up and drop off passengers between Boyd Tower and Hardin
Library. Two new bus stops will become operational with the opening of the

facility. The other will be located south of the Veterans Administration Medical
Center, just east of the point where the relocated road connects with the
present Newton Road location. The bus routes will not change other than using
the relocated Newton Road. Passengers can board and de-board at either of
the two new bus stops. No other bus stops will be affected, and time schedules
will remain the same.
The VA Loop will be closed for construction for approximately three weeks.
The routes that use this loop, Pentacrest and Oakdale, will use the new bus
stop immediately east of the loop.
There will continue to be access to pick up and drop off passengers in front
of the Medical Education Building and in front of Boyd Tower of the University
of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. For about the next month, vehicular access
to those drop-off points will be from the east via the old Newton Road. When
the final work on the relocated road is completed, access will be from the
