Lola Lopes is named UI associate provost for undergraduate education

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University of Iowa business professor Lola Lopes has been named the new associate provost for undergraduate education.

Lopes will assume the position July 1, replacing John Folkins, who left the May 1 to become provost and vice president for academic affairs at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

As associate provost for undergraduate education, Lopes will direct UI academic support services, including the Office of Admissions, the Registrar, the Academic Advising Center, Student Financial Aid, the Center for Teaching and the Evaluation and Examination Service. Her responsibilities will include oversight of academic advising, enrollment management, development of new learning technologies, and coordinating educational agreements with other universities and schools in Iowa.

"For me, undergraduate education is the best and most important part of what university life is about. I am delighted to be entrusted with this honor and responsibility," Lopes said.

Lopes is a professor of psychology and the Marvin and Rose Lee Pomerantz Professor of Business Administration in the UI Henry B. Tippie College of Business. She also served as associate dean of undergraduate programs in the Tippie College of Business from 1995 to 1999.

"Professor Lopes has always been dedicated to serving students at the University of Iowa and will be an excellent member of our administrative team. As undergraduate dean in the Tippie College of Business, she initiated an early admissions program, helped create a writing program for accounting students, and improved access to computing technology for undergraduates," said UI Provost Jon Whitmore. Lopes also initiated the creation of a dedicated floor for business students in Burge Hall, he added.

She joined the Tippie College of Business in 1990, teaching in the department of management and organizations. Before coming to the UI, Lopes was chairman of the psychology department at the University of Wisconsin from 1988 to 1990. She began teaching at Wisconsin in 1974 as a member of the psychology faculty. In 1986, she was also appointed to the industrial engineering faculty in the engineering college at the University of Wisconsin.

Lopes has a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of California-San Diego, a master's degree in psychology from California State University-Long Beach, and a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Redlands. Her research has focused on decision making under risk, judgment processes, and human rationality.
