Hunsicker is honored by American Society of Transplantation

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Lawrence Hunsicker, M.D., professor of internal medicine in the University of Iowa College of Medicine and medical director of organ transplantation at the UI Hospitals and Clinics, is being honored by the American Society of Transplantation (AST).

Hunsicker will receive the 2000 Roche Distinguished Achievement Award Wednesday, May 17 at the society’s annual conference in Chicago. AST president John Lake, M.D., said Hunsicker is "the sixth recipient of the honor -- the most prestigious award given by the AST to honor a senior investigator who has made enormous contributions to the field of transplantation medicine and immunobiology." Lake said the citation also conveys a $25,000 gift to Hunsicker.

In addition to patient care, teaching and research at the UI, Hunsicker is a national leader in organ transplantation issues. He is a past president of the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), the organization that administers organ transplantation policies and distribution of donor organs under a contract with the federal government.
