Public invited to UI firearm injury prevention seminar March 30

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- "Keeping Your Child Safe: Preventing Firearm Injuries," a free community seminar presented by University of Iowa Health Care, will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 30 at the Hampton/Clarion Conference Center in Coralville.

The evening's featured speaker will be Lori Thomas, an emergency room staff nurse at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. Information will include:

-- Prevalence of firearm injuries;

-- How to prevent firearm injuries in settings outside your home;

-- How to properly store firearms;

-- How to use trigger locks; and

-- How to talk to your child about firearm safety.

Some 40 percent of American households with children have guns. Each year an estimated 1,500 children ages 14 and under are treated in hospital emergency rooms for accidental firearm injuries.
