Law school conference encourages more women legal professionals
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Organization for Women Law Students and Staff will
hold a Women in Law Conference Saturday, March 25 at the University College
of Law, an event organizers hope will motivate more women to seek out careers
in the legal profession.
The 23rd annual conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and includes
information on admissions, financial aid and placement. Panel discussions
by women law students and attorneys will give information about the legal
profession and how to make it a reality. A mock class presented by a UI law
professor will also be held.
Attendance is free for UI students. A $10 fee for non-students covers registration,
a breakfast meal with faculty and a luncheon.
Nationwide, the percentage of women associates at firms reached 41 percent
in 1999. Among women of color, the percentage was 12 percent, according to
a study by the National Association for Law Placement. The NALP study also
showed the number of women partners at some of the nation's major law firms
is slightly increasing. The 1999 study showed that women accounted for just
over 15 percent of partners in these firms. In 1993, that number was 12.27
