UI WISE program to give books to Iowa City Community School District

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program plans to present the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) with a gift of books valued at $1,500 during a 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, March 21 ceremony, just prior to the district board meeting.

Chris Peterson Brus, WISE program director, says that the idea behind the gift is to provide the schools with "role modeling" books that allow girls to read about women in positions of excellence so that they, in turn, can invest themselves in dreams of high achievement. She adds that the schools recently conducted a curriculum review in collaboration with ICCSD staffers Mary Jo Langhorne, media coordinator, and Jeanne Bancroft, science/health coordinator, to decide which books would be most appropriate for their needs. Brus says she hopes the gift will increase the opportunities for girls of all ages to explore science and engineering in order that they may reach their full potential.

The UI WISE Program works with science, engineering and mathematics programs at the University of Iowa to increase the participation and advancement of women as students, faculty and professional staff. It develops outreach programs for pre-college students while striving to inform the public of educational and career opportunities for women in scientific and technical fields.
