Achutan wins 2000 Industrial Hygiene Scholarship from 3M

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Chandran Achutan, a Ph.D. student in industrial hygiene at the University of Iowa Department of Occupational and Environmental Health, is one of four students nationwide to receive a 2000 Industrial Hygiene Scholarship from 3M.

Winners of the $3,000 scholarship, awarded by the 3M Occupational Health and Safety Division, are selected based on academic excellence, commitment to the profession of industrial hygiene and related work experience. Achutan graduated from Universiti Sains Malaysia, located in Penang, with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry, and completed his master of science (M.S.) at the University of Iowa Department of Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health. His M.S. thesis focused on the development of a method for the extraction of pesticides from surface water.

While at Iowa, Achutan initiated the formation of the Iowa-Illinois Industrial Hygiene Student Association in 1998, and was elected as the first president of the organization. He was also selected as a member of the Future Leadership Pool by the American Industrial Hygiene Association.
