National Council of Teachers of English elects Sunstein, Whitmore
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Bonnie S. Sunstein and Kathryn F. Whitmore, both associate
professors in the University of Iowa College of Education, have been elected
to leadership posts within the National Council of Teachers of English.
Sunstein, an associate professor of English and education, was elected to
a three-year term as a trustee of the NCTE's Research Foundation. Trustees
pass judgment on research proposals received from the field and manage fiscal
resources of the Foundation.
Whitmore, an associate professor in the College of Education's Language,
Literacy and Culture Program, was elected to the 2000-2001 NCTE Nominating
Committee. She was also named chair of the committee after receiving the most
votes. Nominating Committee members give regional and teaching-level representation
to the elective processes of the council and help to choose candidates for
other posts as well as the Nominating Committee for the following year.
The National Council of Teachers of English, with 77,000 members worldwide,
is dedicated to improving the teaching and learning of English and the language
arts at all levels of education. Its membership is composed of elementary,
middle and high school teachers, supervisors of English programs, college
and university faculty, teacher educators, local and state agency English
specialists and professionals in related fields.
