National 'Best of Best' award presented to UI Press title

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Press will receive a "Best of the Best" award from the American Library Association (ALA) for "Learning by Heart: Contemporary American Poetry about School," a collection of poems about the school experience edited by Maggie Anderson and David Hassler.

"Learning by Heart" is one of only 40 to earn the prestigious "Best of the Best from University Presses" award, which will be given out July 10 by the ALA during its annual conference. "Learning by Heart" was among hundreds of titles submitted and reviewed for the "University Press Books Selected for Public and Secondary School Libraries 10th Edition."

Megan Scott, publicist, UI Press, says "Learning by Heart" is an "alternately joyous and defiant" collection of poems about the school experience as told through the voices of some of America's best contemporary poets, including Gwendolyn Brooks, Gary Soto, and Naomi Shihab Nye.

Maggie Anderson is associate professor and director of the Wick Poetry Program at Kent State University and has written four books of poems, including "A Space Filled with Moving."

David Hassler is associate artist for the Shaker Heights High School Theater Department (Cleveland, Ohio) and is editor of "April Seeds Dreaming of the Sky," an anthology of poetry by first- and second-graders.

"Learning by Heart" (ISBN 0-87745-6882-3, $29.95 cloth; ISBN 0-87745-663-1, $14.95 paper) is available at bookstores or directly from the UI Press, 1-800-621-2736. For more information contact Megan Scott at (319) 335-2008 or
