Parrott is named director of university communications and outreach

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Steve Parrott, who has served as interim director of university communications and outreach since November 1998, has officially been named to that position, according to Ann Rhodes, UI vice president of university relations, who announced last week that she will step down as vice president July 1.

"I am pleased that I am able to name Steve Parrott as director of university communications and outreach," Rhodes said. "He has proven himself a talented administrator, spokesman, communicator, and leader, and I leave the department of communications and outreach in his very capable hands."

As director, Parrott will provide leadership for a staff of about 30 communications professionals and support staff and will oversee the functioning of all units within the department, specifically University News Services, University Publications, Arts Center Relations, and other university outreach programs. He will provide communications coordination with the offices of Health Science Relations, the Joint Office of Communications and Marketing within UIHC, and men's and women's sports information. He also will serve as a university spokesperson, as needed, and will be a liaison between the university and its many external constituencies.

He will earn $90,000.

Parrott, 47, has been at the University of Iowa since 1989 in a number of communications roles, including associate director of university relations, assistant director of news in Health Science Relations and associate editor in University News Services. Formerly he was editor and co-owner of the DeWitt Observer in DeWitt, Iowa. He received an undergraduate degree from Cornell College and a master's degree in journalism from the University of Iowa.
