Phillips Hall basement is re-opened after asbestos clean-up

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The basement in Phillips Hall on the University of Iowa campus will be re-opened today after air samples taken Monday indicated the area was clear of asbestos. The basement, site of a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning project, had been closed after it was discovered that some debris found at the site Tuesday, June 6 contained asbestos.

Envirosafe Air of Omaha, Neb., cleaned the area over the weekend. A series of high volume air samples taken Monday, June 12 were below the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standard for asbestos fibers in the air.

"These results confirm earlier evaluations showing no airborne asbestos contamination in the basement of Phillips Hall," said Eric Bauer of the UI Health Protection Office.
