UI senior is awarded scholarship for foreign language study abroad

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University of Iowa senior Pablo Recinos of Mason City has been awarded the Naomi Gunderson Scholarship for Foreign Language Study Abroad.

One scholarship of $4,000 is awarded annually to a UI undergraduate student to develop advanced proficiency in a foreign language while studying abroad. Preference for the award is given to students who speak a language taught at the UI and who plan to study for a full academic year at a foreign university.

Recinos, who is majoring in Portuguese, Spanish and biochemistry, will participate in the International Student Exchange Program at the Pontificia Universidade Catolica (PUC) do Rio de Janeiro in Brazil during the Spring 2001 term. He hopes to become fluent in Portuguese during his stay by immersing himself in the Brazilian culture and taking language and culture courses.

The Gunderson Scholarship was created in memory of Naomi Gunderson, who attended the UI and earned a bachelor's degree in 1916 and a master's degree in 1919. Gunderson taught English, Spanish and Latin at high schools in Iowa and California. Having studied abroad several times during her college career, Gunderson created the scholarship to enable UI students to also receive foreign experience.
