Release: June 1, 2000

The University of Iowa will hold a demonstration of the partially completed "This Old Digital City" project to be debuted by the University at the Iowa State Fair this summer and permanently exhibited later at The History Center in Cedar Rapids. Funded by private donations, the project is a computer simulation that provides a 180-degree virtual reality model of a 25-square-block area of Cedar Rapids as it appeared in 1900.

1:15 p.m., Friday, June 2, 2000.

Room 311, MacLean Hall, on the Pentacrest, just south of the Old Capitol.

Congressman Jim Leach will tour the project.

NOTE: The project was created by UI computer science graduate student Joan Severson. It is being led by UI computer science professors James Cremer and Joseph Kearney, and The History Center's chief curator Marise McDermott. Cremer notes that the project, with its three wrap-around screens, is an interactive showcase for UI virtual environment technology as applied to the fields of history, liberal arts and education. He notes that plans call for school children to help develop additional historical content for the exhibit over the next several years.
