UI Russian professor is recognized for distinguished career

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Ray Parrott, chairman of the University of Iowa department of Russian, has won the 1999 Award for Distinguished Contribution to the Profession from the American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages (AATSEEL). The recognition comes as Parrott completes his final semester of teaching before his retirement from the UI in May 2000.

Parrott said he was honored to win the award since it has been given in the past to the most prominent individuals in the field.

Parrott has been a member of AATSEEL's Executive Council since 1990, serving two-year terms, respectively, as president-elect, president, and past president of the association. Also, since 1990, Parrott has served as editor of the association's quarterly newsletter. His term as editor will end with his retirement.

The association previously honored Parrott in 1996 with its annual Joe Malik Award for Outstanding Service.

AATSEEL is the major organization in the field of Slavic and East European languages, literature and culture and represents nearly 1,500 language teachers, linguists, and literary scholars nationwide.
