Libraries name Martin first winner of Arthur Benton award

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- J. David Martin, head, Marvin Pomerantz Business Library, has been named the first recipient of the Arthur Benton Excellence in Reference Services Professional Development Award.

The $1,000 award is given biennially to a University of Iowa Libraries professional staff member who has demonstrated outstanding commitment in providing reference services for the UI community. The award will support the winner's professional development activities related to the advancement of reference services and may be used to pay for attendance at conferences or workshops in that field.

Martin, considered an expert in business reference and electronic databases, was nominated by several faculty from the Henry B. Tippie College of Business. He was selected by a committee of librarians and faculty.

Nancy Hauserman, associate dean, College of Business, commented that Martin tolerates and seriously considers suggestions from students and faculty alike in the business information course that he teaches at the college.

"Dave's work with the wireless LAN system at the Pomerantz Business Library has drawn praise and recognition from users and other constituencies on campus. Without Dave's forethought and recognition of its potential, this system would not have been possible," says Scott Fuller, senior computer consultant, Henry B. Tippie College of Business.

The UI Libraries will honor Martin at a reception planned for 3:30 p.m. Feb. 10 in the Main Library North Exhibition Hall.
