Women's Center offers workshop on coalition building
IOWA CITY, Iowa The Women's Resource and Action Center, together
with The University of Iowa School of Social Work and the Emma Goldman Clinic
for Women, will offer a workshop entitled "Building Coalitions,"
on Tuesday, Jan. 18 from 6-9 p.m. in the Ohio State Room in the Iowa Memorial
Union. The seminar is part of an ongoing series on training for social change.
"The Social Change Training Program is designed to teach practical
skills to use in progressive social change work," says Monique DiCarlo,
director of the Women's Resource and Action Center. "More than ever,
it is important for activists to work together collaboratively and form strong
and effective coalitions. In this training, we'll focus specifically on skills
needed to do that."
Trainers for the seminar include Salome Raheim, associate professor and
director of the University of Iowa School of Social Work; Monique DiCarlo,
director of the Women's Resource and Action Center; and Karen Kubby, executive
director of the Emma Goldman Clinic for Women, artist and activist who recently
completed her third term as a member of the Iowa City City Council. All three
presenters have extensive and varied experience in community organizing and
activism addressing issues of racism, poverty, homelessness, domestic violence,
environmental protection and workers' rights.
There is a $10 fee for the workshop; some scholarships are available. To
register or to arrange for childcare or a disability accommodation, please
