Applications sought for international dissertation research fellowship

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Applications are now being accepted for the 2000-2001 T. Anne Cleary International Dissertation Research Fellowship, which provides funds for UI doctoral students to conduct research outside of the United States. The application deadline is April 3, 2000.

The fellowship was created by the UI Graduate Council in 1993 to honor the late T. Anne Cleary, associate vice president for academic affairs and professor of psychological and quantitative foundations, for her strong commitment to the ideals of international education.

The competition is open to all doctoral candidates who will have completed all pre-dissertation requirements by Sept. 15, including the comprehensive exam and approval of a dissertation topic. Fellowships are awarded to Ph.D. candidates whose dissertation research will promote the role of international education and research at the UI.

Fellowships typically provide $1,500-$5,000, but proposals for support of up to $15,000 will be considered. Support may be requested for stipend, post-comp tuition and contributions to travel, subsistence and/or research expenses for any period during the fiscal year (July 1, 2000 to June 30, 2001). Applications are encouraged from students proposing research that involves fieldwork in more than one country or geographical area and that raises theoretical issues in international studies.

Applications are reviewed by a faculty awards committee, which makes a recommendation to the dean of the Graduate College, who makes the final selection.

Additional guidelines and application materials are available on the International Programs Web site at <>. For more information, contact Sandra Barkan, assistant dean, Graduate College, 335-2136.
