initiative to offer the latest in health care technology while increasing
access to vital services, resources and up-to-date health care information,
which can often be communicated most effectively by an expert physician.
"The forum provided by AmericasDoctor.com allows University of Iowa
Health Care to share a wealth of information on specific topics, which is
even more meaningful at a time when awareness of a topic such as heart disease
is heightened, as it is on Valentine's Day or during National Heart Month,"
said Michael Winniford, M.D., UI professor of internal medicine and physician
director, UI Heart Care. "The result is a mutually beneficial situation
where the public can discuss a timely topic of personal interest with an expert
while University of Iowa Health Care can share the expertise of its staff."
UI Health Care's partnership with AmericasDoctor.com is part of an increasing
trend in health care toward enhancing consumer services through the Internet.
According to recent statistics compiled by Cyber Dialogue, a New York firm
that tracks Internet commerce, there are approximately 22 million World Wide
Web users seeking health information over the Internet. Cyber Dialogue projects
that number to increase to 33 million over the next year.
