UI hosts Summer Employment Fair Feb. 15

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa will host the annual Summer Job/Internship Fair Tuesday, Feb. 15 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union.

There will be more than 125 local, regional, and national employers at the fair offering numerous employment, internship, and volunteer opportunities. Employers attending will represent human services, business, and technology fields. The UI Career Development Services web site at has a complete listing of employers.

The event is sponsored by Career Development Services, Student Financial Aid, Student Disability Services, Support Service Programs, the Academic Advising Center, Liberal Arts Academic Programs and the Tippie College of Business Undergraduate Programs Office.

The fair will offer students a chance to talk with employers about summer employment, internship, and volunteer opportunities. Students attending the fair seek summer employment for various reasons. Typically, students want to explore different professions that will help them decide their future career goals. Students also seek summer employment to acquire professional experience in their chosen career field. Finally, some students utilize summer employment to help pay for educational expenses. Regardless of students' employment goals, this fair will provide a vehicle for students to network with employers nationwide.

Students are encouraged to dress in business casual attire to present themselves in a professional manner when job searching. Although resumes are not required, students can bring them, especially if they are looking for specific professional opportunities.

To help students prepare for this event, there will be two workshops entitled "Getting Ready for the Summer Job/Internship Fair" in the Kirkwood Room of the Iowa Memorial Union (Room 257) on Thursday, Feb. 10 and Monday, Feb. 14; both workshops will begin at 4:30 p.m.

On the morning of the fair, there will be a Multicultural Reception from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the North Room of the Iowa Memorial Union. The featured event will be an interactive student/employer panel discussion focusing on the question "What is the best way for your company to address the needs and concerns of students with disabilities seeking internships/employment?" This is another opportunity for students and employers to network. For further information, please contact Gigi Burke Carr at 335-1385.

Students can serve as volunteers for the fair. This will give them increased exposure to employers, enhance their resumes, and they will be eligible to win a prize for their participation. Please contact Cherie Mobasherie at (319) 335-1385 or Steven Hubbard at (319) 335-1037 for more information.

Individuals requiring special accommodations and/or to obtain more information about the fair, please contact Career Development Services at (319) 335-1385.
