UI Alumni Association co-hosts Regents Universities Central Iowa Job Fair

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The University of Alumni Association will join alumni associations at Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa to co-sponsor the Fifth Annual Regents Universities Iowa Job Fair on Friday, Jan. 5 at the Polk County Convention Complex in downtown Des Moines from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Under the auspices of the State Board of Regents, the Job Fair is held each year during the holidays, primarily for central Iowa students who may be home from college. There is no admission fee, and the public is welcome.

The target audience for the event is central Iowa sophomores, juniors and seniors of Iowa's three state universities plus graduates five years out whose permanent place of residence is central Iowa. All of Iowa's four- and two-year colleges have also been invited to the event. In past years, one third of the participants typically have been looking for internships; one-third were recent graduates; and the other third were seasoned professionals looking for additional opportunities and career growth. Last year, more than 750 individuals attended the Fair.

The event has drawn national recognition, having recently received the top award for programming excellence by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) through the National Association of Colleges and Universities.

The Regents Job Fair features employers from all over Iowa who represent various industries, such as health care, insurance, financial services/banking, information services/technology, manufacturing, marketing/communication/sales, hospitality, engineering and construction, and human services. Last year 90 central Iowa employers were showcased.

An added benefit for all participants is the opportunity to have their resumes critiqued by human resource professionals. Members of the Central Iowa Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) will be on hand to provide free professional advice and "tips" on what they look for in quality resumes.

The event also has its own Web site that can be found at Interested employers can register through the Web site. Interested students/attendees can periodically check the Web site to see who the latest employers are who will be attending the event.

The goals of the event are to: help stop the "brain drain" of Iowa's brightest and best; provide employment information and opportunities to Iowa's university and college students about career opportunities in Iowa -- that it is not necessary to leave the state after graduation; allow employers to recruit Iowa's best for the growing number of internships, as well as full-time opportunities, especially important in today's tight labor market; and provide key employment information and opportunities for Iowa graduates who have left the state and who wish to return.

The 2001 Regents Universities Iowa Job Fair is again co-chaired by Bob Mitchell, SPHR, president, Bob Mitchell & Associates, and Jan Burch, SPHR, president, Jan Burch & Associates, independent consulting firms that provide human resource management services in central Iowa.
