International Women's Club invites new, old members
to Sept. 6 meeting
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The International Women's Club
(IWC) will hold its first general information meeting of the year Wednesday,
Sept. 6 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Mennonite Church, 405 Myrtle Street, Iowa
City. The IWC invites new members as well as current members to join in welcome
activities, which include membership sign-up, interest group sign-up, and
general information on Iowa City and Coralville. Refreshments will be served.
The IWC has been active for more than 35 years and
promotes itself as "A club for women from the U.S. and around the world."
Currently there are 135 members from a variety of countries including Japan,
Korea, China, Argentina, Brazil, South Africa, Russia, Thailand and Taiwan.
About 27 of the current members are American.
"Membership in the IWC provides an opportunity for
women from diverse cultures and backgrounds to make new friends and learn
about other customs and cultures including those of the U.S.," said Jessica
Lee, co-president of the IWC. "Our goal is to get to know other people and
to learn culture from other countries and to enjoy other cultures and people."
Because English is not the first language for many
of the members, the IWC offers informal English Conversational Classes each
semester. For the fall semester, classes will be held Tuesday and Thursday
mornings 9-11 a.m. beginning Sept. 12 and continuing until Nov. 16. Child
care will be provided during class time. Lee says the English classes are
the most popular activity sponsored by the IWC.
In addition to providing a forum for the sharing of
culture and experiences, the IWC also has a number of interest groups for
members, including coffee, cooking and craft groups. Also, there are activities
held throughout the year like the Halloween party, holiday party, Valentine's
party and field trips in which members and their families can take part.
The IWC holds a general meeting once a month for all
members. Interest groups typically meet once a month as well. There is a $10
annual membership fee to cover the cost of printing and mailing the club newsletter.
An additional $10 per semester fee is required to register for English classes.
For more information, contact Joanne Madsen, 351-2595 or Jessica Lee, 351-3132.
The IWC is affiliated with the Office of International
Students and Scholars at the University of Iowa. OISS is part of UI International
Programs, which consists of a number of offices, centers, degree programs,
academic programs, research projects and services. Organized under the associate
provost and dean for International Programs, these units serve to further
internationalize the campus and community and promote global scholarship,
research and teaching.
