Intermedia artist Miriam Bennett will have performance and installation
at UI Museum of Art
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Museum of Art will present "_still
moving present_ ," a performance art work by intermedia artist Miriam
Bennett, at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8, as well as "what remains in each
case: 2 installations by Miriam Bennett," to be on exhibition in the
museum Sept. 9-Nov. 26.
Bennett, who received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the UI School of
Art and Art History in the spring, will be joined by Melissa Lockwood and
Rachel Winborn for the Friday evening performance, which will be free and
open to the public. The three artists will present a hybrid performance incorporating
movement, video and film.
Museum of Art Director Howard Collinson said, "This multi-layered performance
in video, film and body will challenge the separation between recorded imagery
and live performance. The performance will emerge from a combination of actions,
images and puzzling distinctions between real and imagined spaces."
Bennett's two installations, "carbon cycle" and "drawn,"
grew out of her work for last spring's "MFA 2000" exhibition, and
were commissioned by the Museum of Art.
Collinson said the installations "will explore obsession and metamorphosis,
giving the visitor clues to mysterious events and histories invented by the
"Atmospheric and haunting, they share a sensibility with science fiction
and surreal film," he said.
The Sept. 8 performance of "_still moving present_" will include
material of an adult nature. Potential audience members who are concerned
