WOW! Downtown Street Festival is Friday, Aug. 25

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The two-week welcoming back program for new and returning University of Iowa students proceeds this weekend with WOW! Downtown Street Festival, Friday, Aug. 25 and will be held on downtown's Pedestrian Mall from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m.

The alcohol-free program includes entertainment and is sponsored by the Weeks of Welcome 2000 and several Iowa City businesses.

Listed are attractions and entertainment to take place as part of the Downtown Street Festival:

-- Salsa music, salsa lessons and dancing, music played by Alto Maiz,
-- Free stress-reducing massages offered, sponsored by Eastwind School of Holistic Healing and Iowa City Chiropractic Health and Sports Injury Clinic,
-- Children's Activity Corner, sponsored by the Iowa Gym-Nest Club, Iowa City,
-- Scavenger Hunt, sponsored by various downtown businesses and the UI Dance Marathon student organization,
-- Ergathon Activity Station, seated rowing machine and simulated computer race, sponsored by the UI Women's and Men's Crew Teams,
-- Variety Stage Act, from 7-10 p.m, sponsored by the Women's Resource and Action Committee,
-- Graffiti Theatre, 9 p.m.,
-- Fatal Vision Booth, interactive activity which allows the public to safely learn about how alcohol affects driver ability, sponsored by the UI Department of Public Safety and the Iowa City Police Department
-- Downtown Festival Photo Booth, free 5 X 7 pictures offered and additional one-hour prints can be purchased,
-- Vendors and free giveaways,
-- Movies projected onto the Sheraton Hotel east wall from 10 p.m. to midnight.
