Squier named UI associate provost for health sciences

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Christopher A. Squier, Ph.D., associate dean for research and graduate studies in the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, has been named the university's associate provost for health sciences. Squier's appointment, which began Aug. 1, will continue until July 31, 2001. He replaces Kathleen Buckwalter, Ph.D., who has taken a year's leave of absence.

In his new role, Squier will advise UI Provost Jon Whitmore in matters related to the health sciences colleges and facilitate the development of interdisciplinary educational, research and service programs in the UI Colleges of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Public Health. Squier, who in his new position reports to Whitmore, will work with the deans of the UI health sciences colleges, as well as other units and departments on campus.

"Dr. Squier has built an outstanding reputation as an educator, researcher and administrator, and he is a well-respected member of the university community," Whitmore said. "I look forward to working closely with him over the next year."

Squier, a professor in the dental school's oral pathology, radiology and medicine department, joined the UI faculty in 1975. His research interests include oral cancer and the permeability of skin and oral mucosa to substances such as alcohol and tobacco. He has written numerous journal articles and book chapters on the topic of smokeless tobacco as it affects the mouth and gums. Squier directs the UI College of Dentistry's Oral Soft Tissue Program, Center for Oral Mucosal Disease in Aging, and Dentist-Scientist Program.

Squier earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Cambridge and his Ph.D. at the University of London. He is a current member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Oral Biology and the Journal of Dental Education, a member of the Board of Directors of the Midwest Division of the American Cancer Society and of the Council of the Iowa Division of the American Cancer Society. His professional affiliations include the American and International Associations for Dental Research and the International Association of Oral Pathologists.
