Self-employment training offered to Council Bluffs area residents

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Persons with disabilities in the Council Bluffs area who are thinking of starting a business will receive specialized self-employment training at Exploring Entrepreneurship, a jointly sponsored state and University of Iowa program to be offered in that area April 24 and again May 1.

Exploring Entrepreneurship will be held at Best Western Crossroads of the Bluffs, 24th Street and I-80, Monday, April 24. The second part of the half-day training will be Monday, May 1. Each training session will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Registration is required, and participants will be notified upon registration to which classroom to report.

Cristina Mathis, program manager of Business Assistance Services for Entrepreneurs, the joint service which makes the program possible, says participants will learn about the myths and realities of business ownership, evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of business ownership, determine business feasibility; and share information about available resources.

Special accommodations, such as sign language interpreters and materials in alternate formats, will be provided upon timely request.

Participation in the program costs $25 and is limited to the first 25 persons to register. Scholarships that cover the two-day seminar, textbooks and other materials are available to persons who qualify. The seminar is a service of the Iowa Department of Economic Development and the UI's Law, Health Policy & Disability Center.
