Belin-Blank Center to host Talent Development symposium May 18-20

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa's Connie Belin & Jacqueline N. Blank International Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development will host the Fifth Biennial Wallace National Research Symposium on Talent Development May 18-20.

Researchers and theorists from around the world will present their current work on talent development, creativity and gifted education during the symposium. All conference activities will be held at the Iowa Memorial Union.

Six keynote speakers will make presentations during the symposium: James Gallagher of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Lorin Hollander of Stockton Springs, Maine; Miraca Gross of the University of New South Wales; Barbara Kerr of Arizona State University; Camilla Benbow of Vanderbilt University; and Nicholas Colangelo, director of the Belin-Blank Center.

Hollander, a renowned pianist who debuted at Carnegie Hall when he was 11, will also give a performance during his keynote presentation 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. Thursday, May 18. Both the performance and a dessert reception from 9 to 10:30 p.m. are free and open to the public.

An infant child prodigy who began composing music at 3 and who performed the Well-Tempered Clavier of Bach at 5, Hollander has performed with virtually every major symphony orchestra in the world.

Pre-registration for the symposium is preferred, although on-site registration will be possible. The full-conference registration rate is $295, if registered on or before May 1. May 18, 19 and 20 each have daily rates. Student rates and rates for continuing education units are also offered. All of the set rates will go up in price after May 1.

One semester-hour of academic credit is also offered to students attending the symposium. The fee for one semester hour of graduate or undergraduate credit will be in addition to the symposium registration fee.
