Iowa/Northern Illinois tailgate party features live band, ice cream eating contest

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Join the party crowd this Saturday before the Iowa/Northern Illinois game, catch the music of "Blaiyne," and enter the Blue Bunny ice cream eating contest during alcohol-free pre-game festivities in Lot 14. Free music, food, beverages and games will be provided for all Hawkeye fans beginning at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18.

"You don't have to park in Lot 14 to participate in our tail-gate," says Julie Phye, coordinator of the Stepping Up Project, "but you do have to like ice cream to participate in the ice cream eating contest. This tailgate event is open to everyone: students, adult fans and their children – even students and fans from the opposing teams." Prizes will be awarded to winners of the ice cream eating contest.

Lot 14 is located just south of Slater Residence Hall at the northeast corner of Melrose and Grand avenues and is UI's designated alcohol-free lot. Football parking is available in all UI lots beginning at 7 a.m. for $5 per car. Game time this Saturday is 5:15 p.m.

Sponsors of this Saturday's alcohol-free tailgate are: Blue Bunny Ice Cream; Trinity Episcopal Church; New Song Episcopal Church; Episcopal Campus ministry; and Graduate Student Development Association.

The Stepping Up Project is a community coalition to reduce the harmful consequences of high-risk drinking and is funded in part by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. For more information, call Julie Phye at (319) 335-1349.
