Writers’ Workshop faculty join in panel discussion Nov. 11

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Members of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop faculty -- Frank Conroy, Ethan Canin, Chris Offutt -- will join with alumnus Tom Grimes in a panel discussion, in light of two recent books, "The Workshop" and "The Eleventh Draft," which document and celebrate the workshop’s history, at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11 at the Shambaugh Auditorium on the University of Iowa campus in Iowa City.

The discussion -- broadcast as part of the "Live From Prairie Lights" series originating live on the UI radio station WSUI, 910 AM -- is free and open to the public.

Conroy, director of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop since 1987 and author of the National Book Award-nominated "Stop Time," edited "The Eleventh Draft," a collection of essays on the writer’s craft.

Robert Stone writes, "The selections in ‘Eleventh Draft’ provide unparalleled insights into the writing process. Some are impassioned, some cool, all are eloquent and lucid. This is a book anyone interested in the creative process should own."

In "The Workshop," Grimes has collected 43 stories by Writers’ Workshop graduates, many introduced by the writers themselves, and a series of essays on Iowa’s place in 20th-century American literature. Grimes directs the Masters of Fine Arts Program in creative writing at Southwest Texas State University.
