UI Law students advance to regional trial advocacy competition

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Six University of Iowa College of Law students will represent the College of Law at a regional trial advocacy competition against students from Midwest universities Feb. 4 - 5 in Kansas City, Mo.

Third-year students Tom Ksobiech, Mary Prescott, Rockne Cole, Chris Lambert, and second-year students Justin Allen and Marc Beltrame bested 36 other UI law students in a show of trial advocacy skills during the Stephenson Competition's final round held Oct. 16 at the 17th annual Stephenson Banquet. The winner of the regional competition will compete March 30 - April 1 in Dallas, Texas at the National Trial Competition, sponsored by the American College of Trial Lawyers and the Texas Young Lawyers Association.

The final round of the Stephenson competition was presented before U.S. Senior District Judge Harold D. Vietor; U.S. District Judges Ronald Longstaff, and Judge Michael Melloy; and U.S. Magistrate Judge Ross Walters.

At the banquet, Ksobiech and Prescott tied for best advocate; each received a $300 cash award from the Iowa Academy of Trial Lawyers. The guest speaker at the banquet was attorney Matthew Nagle of Lynch, Dallas, Smith and Harmon law firm in Cedar Rapids.
