Old Capitol web site wins state tourism award

IOWA CITY, Iowa —The University of Iowa’s Old Capitol Museum web site received the 1999 Web Site Award from the Iowa Division of Tourism and the Travel Federation of Iowa at the annual tourism conference in Sioux City.

This inaugural award, presented by Iowa Division of Tourism Administrator Nancy Landess and President Tom Kuhlman of the Travel Federation of Iowa, was created in recognition of the increasingly important role the Internet plays in tourism marketing. Sites were evaluated for design, ease of use, information presented, and use in the organization’s overall marketing campaign.

"The Old Capitol Museum’s site is unique in design and very easy to use," Landess said. "From special pages dedicated to teachers who want to incorporate the Old Capitol’s history into their lesson plans, to fun facts for children who are searching for information about the Old Capitol, this site is a valuable resource for Iowans and our visitors."

From the homepage, site visitors can hop on a virtual tour, click through history, head directly to the classroom, wander through the gift shop, or quickly check the information page. A clickable floorplan links visitors with each room in the museum. Room pages offer wide-angle views as well as photographs of individual artifacts and detailed history. The special page for teachers features a teacher’s guide, suggested activities and a quiz.

The site has also been selected as "Pick of the Day" by Yahoo. Designers of the site are Molly Burgess Smith, technical expert, and Ann Smothers, director of Old Capitol Museum.
